The news may well have slipped past many of our regular readers but a week ago England’s most senior first class cricketer Mark Ramprakash bagged a pair. Incredibly this was only the third pair he had bagged in a 25 year professional career.

Ramprakash who played in Western Australia for University started his professional career in 1987 and was capped by Middlesex in 1990. HIs feat has however also managed to gain him an entry into the record books.

There have been 694 instants of batsmen being dismissed for nought in both innings in English first class cricket, but Ramprakash is the first to suffer the ignominy of a pair on the same day’s play!

For those who are interested Mick Norman of Northamptonshire was out twice for nought to the first ball of the innings playing against Glamorgan in 1964; Another unwanted record.

Cricket fans across the globe are happy that former South African Dave Richardson is the new CEO of the ICC. Having stepped up after ten years as the ICC’s General manager he will understand the workings of the organisation as well as the politics. Richardson is also a former lawyer so will have no doubts as to the procedural side of running Cricket needs to be above suspicion.

Many have questioned the reasoning behind the ICC being based in Dubai and currently located in the middle of a dusty building site which one scribe described as “an outbuilding on a forgotten industrial estate.” It will be interesting to see if during his tenure he tries to re-locate Crickets headquarters to a more traditional location, or at least to one where the nation plays Test Cricket.

There was much gnashing of teeth as the Perth Glory’s decision to form a relationship with a sole state League club started to unfold. First there was the lack of clarity as to how this relationship was going to work, with it eventually revealed it was a sponsorship deal.

Not the Footy Show hears that it is not just the other State League clubs who are concerned about the arrangement, and the whole issue was raised behind closed doors at Perth Glory recently.

Apparently clarity was sought as to whether Inglewood United was officially being used as a feeder club for Perth Glory. With key personnel in the room greatly concerned that if it was there were players currently wearing Inglewood’s colours who would never be close to being offered an A League contract, and therefore the wrong message was being conveyed to the local community.

It was agreed that Inglewood was not an official feeder club and that the arrangement between the two clubs was beneficial in other ways to both parties.

One would have thought that that would have answered all of the concerns, but it is understood that a request was made that this fact be minuted so that everyone could refer back to it should there be issues in the future to the contrary.

Anyone who follows Football will know that when Sepp Blatter says something then no questions need to be asked.

Which is not good news for Juventus fans.

The President of FIFA sent a letter to Andrea Agnelli the President of Juventus congratulating him and his club on winning their 28th Serie A title. The trouble is Juventus believe that they have in fact won 30 titles refusing to accept that they have been stripped of the 2005 and 2006 titles due to match fixing.

Mr Blatter’s letter has found its way into the media and he states “Congratulations for the 28th title after nine years you are once again the best in Serie A. Well done.”

If Sepp says it, then it must be true!

The performance from the Emirates Western Force at the weekend will no doubt be given some positive spin to show that the side had spirit to fight back against the Melbourne Rebels after being 26-15 down at half time, but questions have to start being asked.

Richard Graham was dispensed of to all intents and purposes by the playing group after he announced that he would be leaving at the end of the season. A decision that gave a very clear sign as to who was running the club, as the CEO and board had to reverse an announcement that he would be coaching until the end of the season.

When he announced he would be leaving Graham stated he was looking forward to going back to a state with a rugby culture, Queensland, and that was probably the key comment that he made and yet it has been brushed over by many.

It would appear the lack of leadership off the field is costing the team dearly on it.

The team have not won a game since Graham was stood down. In fact they have not looked like winning a game since then. Many may say they lost by one point yesterday which was unlucky, having fought their way back and actually taken the lead with three minutes remaining, but in truth the Rebels were the better side and always looked more threatening.

Post game the Emirates Western Force Skills & Defence Coach Phil Blake said “It was a game of two halves as they say. We certainly didn’t get off to the start that we wanted to and that put us on the back foot.” Yet the start was predictable by simply watching the intensity and the commitment of the two teams warm up. That again comes down to leadership, Coaches, Captains and senior players.

We could also question the selection, leaving Alfie Mafi on the bench seemed bizarre and when he came on as a substitute late in the first half it was he who sparked the Force’s revival. However selections can always be questioned and often hide the real issues.

The Force have done well to attract big name players to Western Australia, but their recruitment has not changed the form on the paddock.

If they are to become a Force – and you will hopefully excuse the pun – the new coach needs to create a whole new culture at the club. He also needs to somehow have that culture permeate throughout the whole club, not just in the dressing rooms. It will be a tough task but given the power to do so there are several people who can do it.

Unless there is a cultural change the Emirates Western Force will continue to chase games and finals berths, rather than leading the way in games and on the ladder.

They say that success comes from hard work and dedication, but some cynics would claim that success in modern sport can often come down to who has the most money.

The problems often arise when that money dries up.

The salary cap in the Hyundai A league was supposed to ensure an even playing field, yet we have seen sides looking desperately to find ways to circumvent ‘the Cap’ and assemble a squad within the set confines.

The NRL were brutal when they uncovered such breaches by the Melbourne Storm and stripped them of their titles, the powers that be at the FFA are not quite as authoritarian.

Sydney FC were accused of a breach in the 2009/10 season which the FFA brushed aside even though many in the media believed there was a strong case to be answered; It was in this season that Sydney FC won the league Premiership and the Championship in the Grand Final. It would therefore have been embarrassing to have to strip one of the A leagues deemed blue Riband clubs of their titles.

Yet in the 2006-07 season, Sydney FC were fined $174,000 and deducted three competition points after it was found that they had exceeded the salary cap by $110,000 and failed to declare third-party payments during the 2005–06 season, one in which once again they were premiers. The season in which they were punished they were struggling on the park

Not The Footy Show understands that a forgiving approach was taken with another successful A League club when they overstepped their Salary cap limit a few seasons ago, and worked with the club to ensure that it did not happen again.

It is understood that the same approach has been taken with another A league club leading into the 2012/13 season. This club however is rumoured not to have gone marginally over the salary cap but to have almost fragrantly ignored it.

If this is the case one has to ask if the softly-softly approach is in fact the correct one to be employed. Surely heavier sanctions need to make a clear statement to the clubs as to who is in charge and that such flagrant breaches will not be tolerated and will receive heavy punishment.

One source advised that there is a fear that if these breaches were made public it would bring more negative publicity to the game. We believe it would in fact have the opposite effect. It would show that the game is in good hands and being run by people who create rules and make sure that they are adhered to. If not then individuals and clubs face the consequences of breaking the rules.

It is again time for some honesty, after all if teams are being allowed to breach the salary cap and go unpunished what hope is there for teams who play by the rules?

There is no doubt the sporting world was shocked when Bolton Wanderers player Fabrice Muamba collapsed at White Hart lane in their FA Cup quarter final fixture against Tottenham Hotspur. His was an unfortunate incident at which television cameras were there is force.

In the same week in India Bangalore Mars midfielder Venkatash passed away on the pitch aged 27 of cardiac arrest. Just last month Piermario Morosini, 26, collapsed on the pitch while playing for Livorno in an Italian Serie B match. He was rushed to hospital but later died. These two players were not as lucky as Muamba, and our thoughts go out to their team mates and their families.

Others too have lost their lives playing the sport they love, the unfortunate Lizzie Watkins hit in the head by a hockey ball in Perth, Claire Squires 30 who died during the London marathon, and a 15 year old playing rounders in England. Life is tough, but at least all of these people left us doing something they enjoyed.

Patrice Muamba, may never play football again, and no doubt his life has been turned upside down, and we no doubt all wish him a speedy recovery.

He recently sold his story to The Sun newspaper, reportedly for what is believed to be upwards of a quarter of a millions pounds. Many will say he may well need that to be able to move on with his life, and you could be right.

However it is t be hoped that he will also donate some of that money to the St John’s Ambulance staff and other medical people who that day worked tirelessly to save his life, so that they may be able to save other people’s lives in the future.

It is worth noting that the fundraiser on the website for Claire Squires, after her unfortunate passing during the London marathon has raised almost the same amount of money for the Samaritans, another service that does such good work with limited financial support.

Many may not know that the City of London recently held its Mayoral elections, and the incumbent Boris Johnson managed to hold onto his mayoral robes against former Lord Mayor Ken Livingstone.

What is lightly ironic, with London hosting the Olympic games in just over two months, is that both candidates missed out on tickets in the ballot!

Johnson is fortunate that the Lord Mayor of London will play a key part in the pomp and ceremony of the Opening ceremony. To the victor go they spoils as they say!

However Mr Livingstone has friends in high places and Shadow Olympics Minister – yes there is such a role – Tessa Jowell, has gone into bat for him to be given a ticket after the work he put in when in office for London to secure the Games in the first place.

She will also be doing the same for former Labour Sports minister Richard Caborn, who also missed out in the ballot.

With millions of Britons disappointed to have missed out in the Ballot there may well be a rush to their local member to see if any strings can be pulled for worthy constituents, but we doubt that they will be as lucky as messers, Johnson, Livingstome and Caborn!

Let us state for the record that we are fans of Tony Popovic and the way that he has conducted himself throughout his career and as a coach.

In fact we were delighted to see him given an opportunity as an assistant coach at Crystal Palace in England, a club at which he had played. This was not only good for him but also good for Australia and future Australian coaches with ambition.

He was the only Australian holding down a coaching position in the United Kingdom. For Australian coaches to improve and if we are to see an Australian one day again lead Australia on the International stage we need more coaches plying their trade in the top leagues of the world. Popovic’s appointment at Crystal Palace gave many hope.

Several players who had successful careers in England and Scotland have opted to return, rather than get on the coaching merry-go-round in these two highly demanding countries. Many will tell you it was time to come home, and that is understandable. Some may have opted for the slightly more secure prospect of a coaching role in Australia, a country where the league is not really conducive to sacking a coach, when the sixth placed team can make the finals.

Tony Popovic is an intelligent man, and he would have thought long and hard before he resigned his position at Crystal Palace to return home.

You cannot blame him for deciding to return and take on the new West Sydney side. He has been offered a five-year deal, longer than any other coach has in the Hyundai A League. With the team being cobbled together at the last minute for next season, no one is expecting miracles, so he effectively has two seasons in which to make his team competitive; only in that second season will the pressure start to mount along with the expectations.

Also having been brought back by the FFA rather than a Franchisee, he puts himself in the box seat for a national team role if things don’t work out, as after all, he has helped them out and given them a marketable name on which to start building a squad.

It is probably a great decision for Tony Popovic and his family, but one cannot help asking the question has he returned too early in terms of beating a path for Australian coaches to be given a chance in Europe?
