Tonight on Not the Footy Show – 30 Sep 2009

Once again we have a jam packed show for you tonight, with a strong emphasis on Squash and football. If that gives you the hump, then we have even catered for you with a segment on camel racing!

Tonight on NTFS – 02 Sep 2009

VolleyballAnother great line up planned for tonight’s show where once again we tackle a wide range of sports and aim to keep Perth abreast of as much sport as we can in two hours. 

So, do tune in tonight to 990am from 6pm – 8pm.


Football
It shows how far the Perth Glory fell in recent seasons that all the talk is about them winning three games on the bounce, Dave Mitchell will join us to tell us if this talk distracts the teams preparation.

Volleyball
Tara West has been selected for the Australian volleyball team heading off to Vietnam this week on the back of the Western Pearls success and she will join us to share what both achievements mean.

Rugby Union
South African journalist Ken Borland will join us from Queensland to give us a South African viewpoint of the Tri-nations test last weekend and the upcoming one this weekend.

Dragon Boat Racing
Doug Sinclair will be back on the show this week to bring us up to speed on how Australia fared at the World Dragon Boat Championships in Prague which ended on Sunday.

Motorsport
Jay Hewson will be joining us from Collie to talk motorsport and preview this weekend’s Collie drift & burnout event.

Hockey
The Kookaburras qualified for the Hockey world cup next year winning the Oceania Cup, and we will catch up with one of the heroes, in what was at times a farce of a tournament.

Boxing
Justin Footit is a boxing promoter desperate to give local talent a chance. Tonight he will join us to talk about the upcoming “Home Grown” event at the Italian Club.

Tonight on Not the Footy Show – 26 August 2009

Rugby-UnionThe Wallabies are back in town and Not the Footy Show goes back in time with injured captain Stirling Mortlock who no doubt wishes he were playing this weekend.

Emirates Western Force centre Ryan Cross has been training in what looks like the starting back line, tonight we get the low down on preparation for this weekend’s Tri Nations Clash at the worst International Rugby venue in the world.

Cycling
Darrell Benson the WAIS cycling coach is back on the show and sharing a unique first in Australian cycling for one of our female and male cyclists.

Dragon Boat Championships
The World Dragon Boat Championships start today in Prague, and we catch up with Doug Sinclair a Dragon boat competitor and International Dragon Boat Federation official to see what Australia’s chances are.

Baseball
Shane Tonkin will be joining us to bring us up to speed with all that is happening in baseball, and we hear there is a great deal happening as the Barbagallo Perth Heat search for a third successive Claxton Shield.

Football
Naum Sekulovski from the Perth Glory will be joining us to discuss if back to back wins are on the cards as the Glory take on Melbourne Victory on Friday night.

Squash
Sarah Cardwell has returned from India and the World Junior Squash Championships, we spoke to here before she left and will be following up to see how the team fared.

Tonight on Not the Footy Show – 19 Aug 2009

MotorsportTonights show has a little bit of an Olympic feel to it as we review the IOC’s executive Board’s decision to recommend that Rugby 7’s be included in the Olympics along with Golf, and that Women’s boxing be allowed.


Motorsport
Ross Tapper the clerk of the course for Targa West will join us to tell us who to look out for in this year’s event and where the best vantage points are.

Cricket
Former England opening bowler Angus Fraser will join us to preview the deciding Ashes test starting at the Oval tomorrow, does he think England have the firepower to take 22 wickets?

Squash
Gary Hampson the President of Squash ACT joins us to talk about how Canberra will host the Australian Open and also their disappointment that Squash was not given the nod for the Olympics.

Football
Tando Velaphi was beaten by a 35metre free-kick which saw the Perth Glory lose their second game of the season, yet up until that moment he had kept them in the game. Tonight he will be on the show to share the joys of being a goalkeeper.

Aerobics
Trudi Nurse has just returned from Las Vegas and the International Aerobic Gymnastic Championships where as coach her team performed well. Tune in to see how World number 1 and West Australian Kieran Gorman fared. Incidentally this year the team was made up of purely Western Australian talent.

Boxing
Boxer Claire Ghabrial joins us to talk about her recent trip to Russia in search of fights and experience, and how she feels now that women will participate in the Olympics.

Rugby Sevens
Western Australian and Wallaroos World Champion Debby Hodgkinson joins us to discuss Rugby Sevens being close to getting Olympic acceptance, and also to talk about what it feels like to be IRB Women’s Rugby Personality of the Year.

Tonight on Not the Footy Show – 12 Aug 2009

WheelchairBasketballAnother week another show and once again we plan to serve up the most diverse range of sports that you will find on radio here in Perth.


Kite surfing
Tony Loxton will take us up, up and away when he joins us to talk Kite surfing and report on the recent course he organised in Bali.

Wheelchair basketball
The Perth Wheelcats are aiming for their fourth consecutive Wheelchair basketball national title, and a key player will be Justin Eveson, who a week ago was awarded the Sandy Blythe medal as the 2008 International player of the year. Tonight he will join us to weigh up the Wheelcats chances.

Swimming
Lachlan Searle was at the Swimming world Championships in Rome and is currently attending the short course championships. He will look back on Rome and those suits and gaze into his crystal ball as to where swimming is headed.

Softball
Kere Johanson has just been appointed High Performance Coach for Softball WA and was assistant coach at the recent World Championships that Australia won beating New Zealand in the final. As a Kiwi he will share his mixed feelings during that final and look at WA’s part in the victory.

Football
Talking of New Zealand Perth Glory did not get off the best of starts last week but they head to the land of the long white cloud this weekend hoping to bag three points. Coach Dave Mitchell will tell us his plans and bring us up to speed with his ever-growing injury list.

Hockey
Rick Charlesworth has announced his squad for the Kookaburras upcoming world Cup qualifier and there are a few WA players selected. One is Ross Meadows and he will join us again to talk about the recent four nations tournament and the up coming game.

Ice hockey
Ric Del Basso was part of the Perth All Stars who took on the Melbourne Ice in a double header at Cockburn Ice Arena at the weekend. This was a great event for Ice hockey in Perth and showcased the talent we have here against one of the top teams in the country. Ric will tell us how he felt the All Stars fared, and hopefully discuss some of the refereeing decisions!

Tonight on Not the Footy Show – 05 Aug 2009

WheelchairBasketballTonight promises to be a show for Champions, as we talk to Former World Champion boxing legend Azumah Nelson, Olympic Wheelchair basketball Champion coach Ben Ettridge, and National Championship winning volleyballer Lori Tyrrell. While Rupert Guiness will talk about the champions of the Tour de France and Simon Hill will be predicting who will be the A-league Champions in 2009/10.


Cycling
The Tour de France may be over but we will catch up with the Sydney Morning Herald’s Rupert Guinness who just covered his 23rd tour and hear his views on all that transpired. He will also plug his book on the tour What a Ride: From Phil Anderson to Cadel Evans, an Aussie Pursuit of the Tour de France.

Ice hockey
Stan Scott will be with us to talk Ice Hockey and preview this weekend’s upcoming fixtures between the WA all stars and Melbourne Ice.

Wheelchair basketball
Ben Ettridge coach of the victorious Australian Rollers Men’s wheelchair basketball team will join us just before they take to the court tonight to talk about how since the Olympics they have gone from strength to strength.

Volleyball
WA have a new national championship winning team, the WA Pearls. They won the national volleyball title last week and Lori Tyrrell will join us to tell us about the championships and what this means for WA.

Football
Fox Sports football pundit Simon Hill will join us to preview the Hyundai A league which gets under way on Thursday. See if his tips match yours.

Boxing
Tonight we will feature an extended interview with former World Champion boxer Azumah Nelson. Famous for his two bouts with Jeff Fenech, Azumah Nelson held a world title for 11 years, and now he is trying to give back to the people of Ghana by setting up a sports academy in the hope they can win their first Olympic medal.

Tonight on Not the Footy Show – 29 July 2009

SwimmingGrant Hacklett had it and he tells us he is not sure how he got it, while Melanie Wee and Kate Leeming are really going to need it as they tell us about two events they are about to tackle that are exhausting just thinking about them. We are talking about endurance fitness.

Tonight we cover some exhausting events, so get comfortable in your armchairs and stay tuned, and be glad you are just listening to “Not The Footy Show!”

If you haven’t voted on our Olympic poll be sure to do so before 5pm as we will reveal the results tonight as next week the IOC decide. Will our poll reflect the thoughts of the IOC?


Swimming
On the show we catch up with Australian swimming legend Grant Hackett who looks back on his career and his family’s long-standing rivalry with Kieran Perkins.

Desert running
When it comes to endurance does it get much tougher than the desert runs? Next year our guest Melanie Wee who is a journalist not an athlete will take part in the Atacama Desert run. This event demands entrants run 250km across Chile in 6 days! We plan to follow Melanie’s preparation and see how she gets on.

Endurance cycling
If that seems tough then our other female guest tonight, Kate Leeming is planning to cycle 24,000kms across the breadth of Africa, from Senegal in the west to the horn of Africa in the East. Now that is serious endurance, although she is allowing herself 10 months to complete the trip.

Boxing
Another man planning to go the distance is WA boxer Mark Di Mori who fights in Perth this weekend against Kiwi Kevin Karusa, he will join us on the eve of his fight to talk about this bout and what Don King has planned for him.

Rugby
Julian Pritchard is a local rugby referee who has climbed the heights in his sport even quicker than he imagined. He went from fourth official to match referee in the recent World Cup qualifying international between Samoa and Papua New Guinea. He has now become WA’s first test match referee. Tonight he will tell us how that feels

Softball
Australia won its first fastpitch softball men’s World Championship in Saskatoon, Canada at the weekend. Softball Australia’s general manager operations Chet Gray will join us to tell us what this means for his sport in Australia.

Water polo
Paul Oberman is the WAIS water polo coach and he joins us tonight to talk about the performances of the men and women at the FINA World Championships in Rome.

Tonight on Not the Footy Show – 08 July 2009

CricketWhat a week for sport. Wimbledon’s gone, but we still have the Ashes, the Tour de France and the Premier League Football in Perth, it just doesn’t get any better. As usual, Not the Footy Show will keep you up to speed on all sports except ofcourse the one we don’t mention.

Football
This Friday night the Perth Glory take on Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers at Members Equity Stadium. Wolves have been based in Perth for their pre-season camp, and coach Mick McCarthy joins us to tell us how his side are shaping up.

Cricket
The much awaited Ashes series gets under way tonight in of all places Cardiff – the first time an Ashes test match has been played outside of England or Australia. We will be chatting to former Australian test player, and Retravision Warriors coach Tom Moody about how he sees the series going. We will also ask about Chris Gayle signing for WA.

Squash
Several weeks ago squash player Mike Corren told us he would win the Golden Open in Kalgoorlie, which he did. Sadly as he does not believe in mobile phones we have had trouble tracking him down, but he has now won his 20th career title,and joins us tonight.

Gymnastics
The Australian gymnastics championships will be hosted in Perth next week and we will chat to WAIS coach Liz Chekovitch about which states are the ones to look out for and which individuals.

Hockey
The Hockeyroos overcame Germany in Perth on Monday night in preparation for the Champions Trophy, and we will be catching up with one of the girls while they are in camp in Sydney.

Olympic feature
We continue our look at the seven sports that have nominated for Olympic inclusion. Tonight one more sport will have its chance to state its case. So listen in and see if you feel it deserves to be included. Be sure to cast your vote on our poll.

Karate
Taekwondo and Judo are there, but Karate is not. Former national coach and Vice President of the Australian Karate Federation of WA, Branco Bratich will state the case for Karate.
