When Will They Learn?
There is a new regime at Perth Glory as well as a new coach and new players. Players whom we have been told that fans can be proud of because they are the next generation of Australian stars and also because many of them are Western Australia.
The rhetoric all sounded great and many were excited by the recruitment, although some worried about teh lack of experience and wondering if there is enough should injures kick in to remain competitive.
If we are to take pride in our local club and be able to relate to the players at that club, why does the club continue to promote opposition players?
In a press release from the club today announcing tickets are one sale for the upcoming season, the second paragraph states. “See the big stars Del Piero, Heskey and Ono along with Australia’s finest footballer Harry Kewell for Hyundai A-League Season 9.”
Their own players are relegated to the third paragraph. Which reads “Perth Glory stars Burns, Smeltz, Vukovic, and Jamieson join an electrifying bunch of young guns that are set to take the league by storm – Risdon, Nagai, Maclaren and WA’s own exciting 16yr old Danny de Silva!”
It is great that the club is finally promoting these players but should they not be headlining to the local fans rather than the oppositions players? One of the first rules in marketing is not to promote your opposition, yet for some reason Perth Glory continue to follow that path, which is truly baffling. It would be interesting to know how the players themselves feel about always getting second billing. Surely they too would appreciate their own club promoting them as the main attraction rather than their opponents. Hopefully some good early results and good performances will see a shift in marketing tactics from the back room staff and Glory fans heroes are billed as such.
