Paying a Penalty

October 13, 2011 at 8:04 am 1 comment

We have always been big fans of goalkeepers, the people who make so many games interesting, and prevent a goal-fest. It is for that reason we are congratulating 22 year old Steve Arnold of the Blue Square Bet Premier League’s Hayes and Yeading, who has saved five out of five penalties in his team’s first ten games. He is in fact on loan from Wycombe Wanderers, but this is no mean feat.

Last weekend he was injured and was replaced by Delroy Preddie, who believe it or not saved a last minute penalty to give his side a 5-3 win over Kettering!

It does not end there, Moses Ashikodi, who took the penalty then ended up in an argument with Jean Paul Marna, who thought he should have taken it, which ended up in both coming to blows, and both being shown a red card!

While all of this is going on Haringay and Waltham from the senior Essex League are asking if they have broken a record, after being awarded 10 penalties in eight consecutive games. Even Sir Alex would be proud of that achievement. However he would be none too impressed that they have missed four and sit bottom of the league!

Can anyone match these feats?

I think this year in the WAPL Inglewood missed five or more penos and in the 2007 FAFC undefeated year Vas VUJACIC definitely saved 5 penalties – I witnessed them all.

Keepers need to make themselves big when penalties are taken.

Not in the same vein – but Matt Lettsier was the undisputed world champion master classer of penalties scoring from the spot 47 times from 48 attempts in top flight English football

Socrates MD for Brazil in Espana ’82 began the art of penalty mickey/piss taking with the one step and shoot method.
