Tonight on Not the Footy Show – 22 July 2009

We are back and once again we have a show bursting at the seams with sport. We will be featuring two national championships that WA did very well at winning gold at both, heading to France for the Tour de France, talking to a WA Champion’s Trophy silver medallist as well as looking ahead to the Avon Descent.

When talking football, tonight we will be looking back at a life in the game, and looking forward to what future the game can give the indigenous community.

Football
Last month the FFA hosted the first Indigenous football tournament in the hope of getting more indigenous youths involved with the World game. Tonight ambassador for that programme Warren Mundine AO joins us to talk about the event and the way forward.

Gymnastics
Perth hosted the National Women’s Gymnastics championships in Perth last week and Lauren Mitchell excelled in the individual events. Head WAIS gymnastics coach Liz Chekovitch will join us to discuss how the tournament went, and how WA did.

Hockey
A rejuvenated Hockeyroos defied the odds and made it to the Champions Trophy final on Sunday losing to Argentina on penalties. One of the new faces in the team who starred was West Australian Ashleigh Nelson and she will join us tonight

Football
While in town Wolverhampton Wanderers Manager Mick McCarthy sat down with us and looked back on his career as a player and a coach. Tonight you will hear how he was rejected initially by Barnsley and told he would never make it, but how he never doubted that he would.

Tour de France
We will also be crossing to France to catch up with Sydney Morning Herald journalist Rupert Guinness to talk about the current race and also the 22 before that he has covered, and which are featured in his book What a Ride: From Phil Anderson to Cadel Evans, an Aussie Pursuit of the Tour de France.

Avon Descent
Greg Tate from the Avon Descent will be joining us to tell us how much all this rain means to him and his fellow organisers and how preparations are going for next month’s premier white water event.

Floorball
The WA Kookaburras club brought home the Floorball national championship from Canberra and Alex Peck was crowned the man of the Grand Final. Tonight Alex will tell us what this means to the Kookaburras club and also the development of Floorball in Western Australia.
